What Is a “Heavy Hauler”?

Heavy-haul trucking transports oversized items such as industrial machinery, military or farming equipment, and construction materials.

Since the trucks transport heavy loads, these shipments require special handling, optimized routing, and additional permits.

  • 80,000 pounds of gross vehicle weight
  • 20,000 pounds of single axle weight
  • 34,000 pounds of tandem axle weight
  • Load exceeding 8.5 feet wide are considered oversize and often require a state permit.
  • Require safetly flags, lights, banners and escort vehicles.

Common Types of Heavy Hauler Truck Accidents

There are many different types of accidents that can occur involving large trucks. These include but are not limited to:

Jackknife Accidents

This occurs when the trailer of the truck swings out from behind the cab at a 90 degree angle, forming a “V” shape. This can happen due to brakes that fail, going too fast around a turn, or cargo shifting inside or ontop of the trailer.

Rollover Accidents

According to TruckersReport.com, rollover accidents account for only 2% of all large truck accidents but they make up almost 20% of all fatal crashes involving these vehicles. Rollover accidents often occur when CMVs are carrying cargo that is not properly secured and causes the truck to lose balance.

Under-Ride Accidents

These types of accidents happen when a smaller passenger vehicle collides with the back end of a CMV and gets wedged underneath it. This can cause catastrophic injuries or even death due to being crushed by the weight of the larger vehicle.

Wide-Turn Accidents

Because large heavy hauler trucks cannot complete right turns in the same small radius as smaller passenger vehicles, commercial truck drivers are often forced to make “wide turns,” i.e., begin a right turn from the second lane to the left instead of the designated right turn lane. Accidents frequently happen as a result.

The Absolute Best

I hired Alex Durst to represent me in a truck accident case that was very serious and traumatic. The truck company fought the case hard and tried to blame ME for the accident. Durst was not going to let that happen.

In the end, I got a GREAT settlement. It’s a huge relief...
